Dr. Yi endeavored to turn the art of planning earthmoving operations and designing temporary haul road layout into science by taking advantage of latest advances in optimization and automation. Though complex in nature as earthworks is, this research is moving positive step towards fully-automated earthmoving operations by providing another alternative solution in planning and designing for earthworks subject to the wish of practitioners, of which the current solution is better than the solution that the practitioners can obtain given the available software and experience. In short, this research contributes to the current knowledge base in planning large site grading project by providing innovative methods in mathematical modelling, problem formulations, and mathematical programming. Practically, the research deliverables are beneficial to various stakeholders in the site grading project: (1) to site manager/superintendent or field engineer, this research provides insightful guidance and decision-making references for temporary haul road designs and operational plans in preliminary construction planning stage; (2) to earthmoving contractors, this research would potentially bring tangible cost savings in earthmoving operations; (3) to truck drivers, this research could potentially create a safer haulage environment by enabling them drive on less risky haul road, thus improving the hauling safety; and (4) to owner/clients, this research could potentially lead to easy-to-track project schedule and quicker project completion.
