“Intelligent Construction, Operation and Maintenance” Overseas Young Scholars Forum of SCE, SWJTU Successfully Held

The 4th “Meeting Global Talents” Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) Scholars Forum—“Intelligent Construction, Operation and Maintenance” Overseas Civil Engineering Young Scholars Sub-Forum went swimmingly online at 14:30 on December 7, 2020.

Digitization, informatization and intellectualization represent the future direction of the development of civil engineering infrastructure. It is necessary to integrate such strategic emerging industries as 3D printing, robotics and artificial intelligence with civil engineering, and promote the industrialization, digitization and intellectualization upgrading of civil engineering from the perspectives of intelligent planning and design, intelligent equipment and construction, intelligent disaster prevention and operation & maintenance, etc. Therefore, this sub-forum themed on “Intelligent Construction, Operation and Maintenance” invited outstanding young and middle-aged talents at home and abroad for exchanges and discussions with our faculty, with the hope that more scholars in interdisciplinary and intellectualization of civil engineering will join us. At the same time, seven scholars in relevant research fields were invited to share their latest achievements and explore the future development trend and path of intelligent construction, operation and maintenance. The forum was hosted by Associate Dean Gou Hongye.

Secretary Liu Xueyi delivered a welcome speech as the beginning of the forum. Secretary Liu first extended a warm welcome to the overseas scholars participating in this forum. He pointed out that the School of Civil Engineering (SCE) of SWJTU has a long history, but the civil engineering as a traditional dominant discipline is faced with great challenges and meanwhile presented with significant opportunities. In the process for the formulation of the 14th Five-Year Plan of the SCE, there is an urgent need to consider how to make the traditional civil engineering discipline beaming with new vitality, in conjunction with the strategy of building a country with strong transportation network. It is hoped that all young scholars would actively put forward suggestions and proposals and contribute to the development of the discipline.

In the second session, Dean Pu Qianhui gave a report on the detailed development of SCE. Dean Pu gave an in-depth and detailed introduction from the aspects of the history of civil engineering discipline, faculty, key platform construction, significant teaching and research achievements, first-class exemplary reform and the 14th Five-Year Plan of the school, and responded to the scholars’ concerns about research laboratories, office environment and other supporting facilities. He emphasized that in the future, the SCE would continue to develop world-class disciplines and promote development of substance in higher education, seizing the opportunity to invest precisely. In addition, the school would gather a large number of extraordinary talents at home and abroad who are suitable for the development of various disciplines and dedicated to learning as well as education, cultivate and develop the talents in different fields, and make every teacher in the school enjoy senses of wellbeing and achievement. At last, Dean Pu sincerely extended an invitation to the outstanding young talents present at the forum, hoping that they could join the SCE and make greater contributions to reinvigorating the country through science and education and building a country with strong transportation network.

In the third session, seven outstanding young scholars gave academic presentations, starting with Dr. Tian Yongding’s presentation entitledStructural Non-Contact Visual Measurement and Rapid Dynamic Identification Method and Its Theoretical Development. And then, Dr. Zhang Ao’nan, Dr. Xu Guowen, Dr. Li Chao, Dr. Si Ruizhe, Dr. Lu Bing and Dr. Han Fei gave series of brilliant presentations ofIntelligent Identification of Common Pavement Defects Based on New Generation Artificial Intelligence Technology,Experimental Research and Theoretical Analysis of Extrusion Deformation of Tunnel Surrounding Rock,Effects of Glass Powder on Microstructure and Properties of Metakaolin-Based Geopolymers,Design and Process Research of New Jet 3D Printed Concrete MaterialandDynamics of Complex Cable Systemrespectively. After each presentation, the participating teachers and doctors passionately exchanged ideas and had a lively discussion on the research priorities and scientific frontiers in their respective field, as well as an in-depth discussion on the theme of “Intelligent Construction, Operation and Maintenance” of this forum, from which everyone benefited a lot.

The last session was for the consultation of talent policies of the SCE. Associate Dean Gou Hongye firstly introduced to the scholars in detail the current policies of the introduction of talents, including the targets of talent recruitment, wanted types of talents and corresponding salary as well as working conditions. Meanwhile, for more scholars’ deeper understanding of the talents and personnel policies of the SCE, Dean Gou made a detailed introduction to the future faculty recruitment plan. He also said that the school’s future talent needs would be tilted from traditional civil engineering discipline to the cross-disciplinary directions, and the school would make an effective career planning for every excellent talent who joins the SCE to help them grow and develop.

The “Intelligent Construction, Operation and Maintenance” Overseas Civil Engineering Young Scholars Forum came to a successful conclusion at 17:40.
