Give Students a silent transforming influence—the 35th Session of “Face-to-Face Exchange with Professors”Held by SCE on April 22, 2021

The activity of “Face-to-Face Exchange with Professors” organized by Center for Student Learning and Development of the School of Civil Engineering (SCE), was held at X4250 at 19:00, April 23. Professor Yu Li was invited to communicate with our students face to face.

During the exchange, Mrs. Yu shared her experience in scientific research and her own views on the study and campus life of university students. Mrs. Yu’s research focused on tunnel ventilation and disaster prevention, ground settlement and building safety caused by tunnel excavation, subway construction and design technology. Moreover, she has been the principal investigator of many scientific research projects, such as Sichuan-Tibet railway tunnel disaster prevention technology. When it came to Mrs. Yu’s education experience, it was in 1996 that she was admitted to Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU). Since 2003, she has stayed at SWJTU for teaching and researching. From July to December 2015, Mrs. Yu made academic exchanges at the University of Alberta in Canada. As Mrs. Yu enjoyed fruitful scientific research experience and academic achievements, as well as rich teaching experience, she was highly respected by students.

“It takes ten years grow trees, but a hundred to rear people.” This was the old saying that Mrs. Yu quoted during the exchange, and it also showed her own determination to cultivate talents for our country. Mrs. Yu pointed that, engineering needed to be taken seriously, and education needed full-hearted engagement. And it was necessary to cultivate students’ all-round thinking ability, take care of and respect students’ opinions, and guide them to make correct choices in their future development. Therefore, “caring for students and being approachable” was certainly a virtue of Mrs. Yu.

Besides, Mrs. Yu especially recommended underground and tunnel engineering to our students majoring in civil engineering, and introduced this specific major direction at length, including the general development direction and training plan in the future. All of these showed the ambition and devotion of civil engineers.

Then came to free questioning time. Facing various questions from the students, Mrs. Yu gave detailed answers and suggestions patiently, which helped many students with their confusion.

With grateful applause, this exchange ended successfully at 20:00, April 23, and the students left the room with great harvest.
