To help freshmen earlier get on track of their university life as well as understand relevant policies, the School of Civil Engineering (SCE) of Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) organized a series of entrance lectures for 2021 undergraduates from September 6 to September 15. These lectures included five topics such as the undergraduate regulations, policies for “scholarships, assistantships and loans", special education of Party and Youth League knowledge, and students' safety. More than 10 counselors gave these lectures. Our reporters visited these special lectures given by Men Ruyi, Wang Qiyao, Liu Ping, Wang Tong and Xie Xincen respectively.
The first lecture was about the undergraduate regulations. Mr. Men introduced the disciplines and rules of SWJTU from three aspects: teaching management, student management and financial management. Mr. Men also answered the students’ questions about undergraduate training plan and credit system, and emphasized some affairs requiring extra attention such as accommodation management, leave procedures and student subsidies. “Study the regulations and play in SWJTU.” Said Mr. Men, “as long as the students behave themselves and abide by school disciplines, could they better enjoy their university life in SWJTU.”
Through the lecture of policy interpretation for “scholarships, assistantships and loans”, the students learned more about the national subsidy policies. Teacher Wang Qiyao explained to the students, “the national subsidy policies aim to help financial-embarrassed students, so that they can get basic living relief and opportunities for personal development.” Ms. Wang later introduced the selection procedure of national- and school-scholarships, and presented the recruitment information of part-time jobs and the requirements for personal honor application. During the lecture, Ms. Wang also gave students additional introduction to other subsidies provided by SWJTU, such as tuition deferment, financial subsidy and warm-winter subsidy, so that more students in need could feel the warmth and care form SWJTU.
The Party knowledge lecture on “strengthening the red faith and striving to be a pioneer model” was hosted by Ms. Liu Ping, who introduced the Party knowledge in five aspects: No New China without the Communist Party, why to join the Party, how to join the Party, the structure of the college-level Party organization and the responsibilities and duties of student Party members. Ms. Liu stressed that students hoping to be a Party member should prepare in three aspects: expanding their ideological horizon, promoting the role as a pioneering model and strengthening the thoughts of moral. They should try to set themselves an example in study, work and life, and actively join the Communist Party of China. At the same time, Ms. Liu emphasized the ideal and mission for young students in civil engineering, and hoped that they would contribute to the development of national railway.
The Youth League knowledge lecture themed on “demonstrate youth to the party and strive for a powerful country" was focusing on the May 4th spirit with patriotism as the core. Mr. Wang Tong explained to students the must-do responsibilities and the basic rights as a Youth League member. The call of “please rest assured that the powerful country has me” was still reverberating around us. General Secretary Xi's appeal to "enhance the ambition, backbone and foundation of being a Chinese, live up to the times, youth and the ardent hope of the Party and the people" made the students passionate.
Considering that the personal and property safety are of crucial importance, safety awareness education becomes the top priority of the entrance lecture. Ms. Xie Xincen listed the safety problems that university students should pay attention to, including anti-theft, traffic accident, fire safety, classmate communication, property, network and personal safety. Ms. Xie detailed every single aspect by combining with specific case to help strengthen students’ self-protection awareness and enhance their self-protection abilities, so that they can stay away from Internet fraud, get along well with teachers and students, and sail through their university life.
Thanks to the 10-day entrance lectures, all students have got a deeper understanding of the national subsidy policies as well as the disciplines and regulations of SWJTU, and at the same time they gained a clearer planning for their future university life. Thus, the entrance education for 2021 undergraduates of the SCE has come to a successful end.
