[Face-to-Face Exchange with Professors] Be Loyal to Your Dream—An Online Lecture...

The online lecture of “Face-to-Face Exchange with Professors”, organized by the Center for Student Learning and Development of the School of Civil Engineering (SCE), was streamed through the video platform Bilibili at 7:30 pm, November 3. Prof. Pan Yi, the expert of seismic design who won “The Prize of China Outstanding Youth in Architecture”, shared with attendees his experience on pedagogy and learning. Prof. Pan’s students also participated in this lecture as examples of outstanding students. Jiang Liu from the Center hosted this lecture.

With a question, Jiang ushered in the theme of this online lecture: Introduction for Anti-Seismic Knowledge and Engineering Process Methods. Said as Prof. Pan, he used to participate in the fieldwork of earthquake relief within Sichuan Province. And he gradually learned something regarding architecture and building structure from those fieldwork, which enabled him to go further in anti-seismic research. Catering for the great demands, graduates majoring in anti-seismic or related areas were bound to embrace good employment chances in Sichuan Province. Meanwhile, Prof. Pan shared his memory about the post-earthquake sites, and stressed that people in the engineering industry should pay more attention to workplace safety. “Precipitous pinnacle brings picturesque view”. Research should be grounded on human safety and reasonable challenges, which were beneficial not only to one’s academic competence, but also to his or her sense of strictness.

When it came to accidents and natural disasters, Prof. Pan suggested that calmness must be a priority, then appropriate actions should be taken based on the actual situation. To be a qualified civil engineer, as Prof. Pan stressed, students should enhance their sense of strictness and lower their arrogance. In this way, he or she could diminish the risk in workplaces, and devote himself to infrastructure construction in China.

Later, the focus of the lecture gradually turned from the popularization of engineering knowledge to the sharing of research methods. During this lecture, Prof. Pan told students that the civil engineering industry requires more people with passion, courage and dedication. It’s better for undergraduates to find focus on their favorite research fields as soon as possible, and participate in some competitions or activities related to their majors while ensuring their school work. Furthermore, the combination of theories and practices, and good schedules were effective methods recommended by Prof. Pan. Set your goal first, and start your adventure next.

After the experience sharing, it was the Q&A session, where the students prepared several questions concerning career path, anti-earthquake methods, research goals and so on for Prof. Pan and his students. Prof. Pan and the student representatives gave thorough answers to all questions. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Pan exhorted: “Always stay optimistic and ambitious, and try to achieve your dreams in a down-to-earth manner, step by step!”
